IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION(ICCP)

IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION(ICCP),ICCP

WHAT IS THE ICCP?
ICCP Is An Cathodic Protection System Install On Ship To Protect The Hull Corrosion.
In modern shipping industry almost all type of ship which is now constructed uses ICCP system as it Eliminate the installation of Sacrificial anode on Every 5-7.5 year of Dry-dock period.

To understand the working of ICCP we first have to understand ELECTROCHEMCIAL SERIES and Galvanic Corrosion.

When two similar metal are in contact with each other in a presence of the corrosive medium(electrolyte), the more active metal act as ANODE
and undergoes corrosion and the less active metal act as CATHODE and is protected by the anode.

Metal with having high oxidation potential are more reactive in nature and acts as Anode in the Electrochemical Series whereas metal with low oxidation potential is less reactive acts as Cathode.
Normally following Metal Combination is used :
Metal Cathode Anode
Cu,Zn Cu Zn
Pb,Ni Pb Ni
Fe,Zn Fe Zn

How the galvanic corrosion occur in Ship Hull?
1.Due to uneven wear and patches of paint different zone are created on is ship hull which will have difference in metallic structure which ultimately lead to galvanic corrosion where seawater acting as electrolyte.
2.Moreover on the aft of the ship galvanic corrosion chance are exceeded because of the difference in material such as propeller and ship hull.
3.Propeller of the ship is made of the magnesium aluminum bronze as compared to the alloy steel of the ship hull. Therefore ship acting as cathode undergoes galvanic corrosion .
In order to prevent such galvanic corrosion ICCP system is implemented on ship

HOW THE ICCP WORK?
Main Component of ICCP are as follow:
1.Reference Electrode(Measuring Electrode)
2.Main Control Panel
3.Impressed Cathode
As we all know due to the Electrochemical reaction a current flow between an Anode and cathode. With the Help of the Reference Electrode this Electric current is Measured and it is send to the Main Control panel where the processed Current is send to the Impressed cathode which prevent the Electrochemical reaction and prevent Galvanic Corrosion.
This processed Current is slightly more than the measured current from the reference cell in order to overcome the Electrochemical galvanic Reaction.\

D.C Current: The processed current which is send to the Impressed anode is D.C current which is rectified by rectifier. This A.C current produced by generator is converted into D.C through rectifier and their amount is controlled by the main control panel and the processed D.C Current is send to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Impressed Anode: these anode are the inert or insoluble anode such as Platinum, Graphite, Titanium which take part in electrochemical reaction but never get eroded.

ICCP in Installation in Ship.

Advantage of the ICCP system
1.Maintenance free system.

  1. Once installed it can continue up to period of 20 years.
3.Elimianate the requirement of sacrificial anode to be fitted on ship
  2. The Impressed anode which is fitted are not welded to the ship hull hence Welding is no more required for fitting anode.
    Disadvantage of the ICCP system
1.Installation cost of the ICCP is very High.
2.Additional monitoring and Maintenance is increased.
